Yaks can vary their breathing rate. At low outdoor temperatures, the breathing frequency decreases, which reduces heat loss. Thus they can cope with ambient temperatures of -30 °C to -40 °C.

Habitat
Yaks find ideal living conditions in regions where the average temperature is below five degrees and does not exceed an average of 13 degrees in the warmest months of the year.
Geographical Range
Wild yaks only live in some parts of western China and Tibet.
Status
Wild yaks have been classified as vulnerable by the IUCN since 1996.
Population
Numbers were estimated at 15,000 in 1996 (8500 wild yaks in Tibet, 3700 in Qinghai and 2500 in Xinjiang), but may have declined somewhat since then.
