Tropical coral: all oceans - in tropical, subtropical and temperate waters - Deep-water coral: cold-water coral reefs are found in all oceans on the slopes of continental shelves, on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and on numerous seamounts.
Status
In general, numerous coral reefs are severely threatened by the warming and acidification of the oceans, especially the deep-water coral (very high endangerment status down to a depth of 2,000 metres (so-called fishing horizon)) and the red coral - listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species "CITES" (Appendix III): Corallium elatius, C. japonicum, C. konjoi, C. secundum (all China).
